The “March of Progress” is most commonly recognized as the 1965 illustration by Rudolph Zallinger depicting the past 25 million years of human evolution. Certain lyrics and the drum sequence evoke primal imagery, and this fits with the general rythmic evolution of the song.
Since its publication the illustration has received much criticism due to new scientific discoveries, and the fact that evolution is not as simple as such a linear depiction. The illustration has also been satirized numerous times, some of these show the negative paths we could evolve along.
