Poor People are a Rock Band from Melbourne.
Poor People grew out a particularly low cash-flow summer where friends got together to waste some hot days. Siblings Lloyd Briggs (Zeroes, High Seas Deep Seas) and Erica Dunn (Barbara’s Bush) already performed as a two-piece around the traps but were soon joined by Jon Chapell (Mclusky, Shooting at Unarmed Men, Harmony) on the drums and Patrick Walker (A Friend Of Mine, Shooting At Unarmed Men, Zombirds) on the bass.
Bringing a range of ridiculous influences together –as far reaching as Bootsy Collins and Steve Albini, they found a common ground in yelling and playing loud tunes. This grew into two insane residencies at the Tote and the Empress, which culminated in Lloyd playing his psychedelic solos in a banana suit, Jon smashing through his drums in a crash helmet and Patrick playing with a broken hand.
Poor People have been labelled by various street press as alt-country, reckless country and menacing country, as well as psych and garage pop, with references to Akron/Family, Scout Niblett, and (sigh) PJ Harvey.
2012 sees them release their debut LP, coming out on Attractive Life records in 7” form on the 14th of January which will be followed by another year of recording and generally being poor, depraved people.
