Biography

Northern Harmony is an American vocal ensemble formed in Vermont in 1993.

Led by Larry Gordon and Patty Cuyler and based in central Vermont, the ensemble's singers and instrumentalists have toured and performed widely throughout America and Europe.

Transcending the traditional definition of choral music, Northern Harmony is renowned for its command of varied world ethnic singing styles, from the hearty, ultra-bright Bulgarian “hard voice” to the equally powerful but darker and more sonorous Georgian timbre to the rich, mellifluous South African style to the wild, unrestrained American shape-note sound to a delicate, pure Early Music timbre.

Northern Harmony includes talented alumni of Gordon’s well-known teenage group Village Harmony, along with a core of professional singers. Directors Cuyler and Gordon and many of the singers extensively studied traditional singing styles with native teachers in South Africa, Bulgaria, Corsica, and Caucasus Georgia.
