"Cinnamon Girl" is a 1969 song by Neil Young that was the opening track on his 1969 album "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere". Young famously revealed in the liner notes for his 1976 compilation album Decade that he wrote the song alongside other album tracks Down By The River and Cowgirl in the Sand while suffering from the flu and a 103 °F fever at his home in California.
Young has never said who the Cinnamon Girl is. He prefers to leave lyric interpretations to the listener. The lyrics did, however, get Young in trouble with his wife, to whom he had to explain that the Cinnamon Girl was just a person he came across while touring.
Young recorded this with his band Crazy Horse. He released the song as a single in 1970, which performed well partly because he was getting exposure as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
The band Type O Negative did a remake of this on their 1996 album "October Rust". This song was also covered by The Smashing Pumpkins on the "Reel Time Sessions" bootleg. Cinnamon Girl was also covered by the band Killdozer on their 1985 album "Snake Boy".
