A few of those songs are just awful conceptually and should be excluded all together.

I think the main problem with this album is the sequencing. This already looks far better: 1. Album Intro 2. N.Y. State Of Mind (Part II) 3. Hate Me Now (Featuring Puff Daddy) 4. Small World 5. Favor For A Favor (Featuring Scarface) 6. We Will Survive 7. Ghetto Prisoners 8. I Want To Talk To You 9. Life Is What You Make It (Featuring DMX) 10. Big Things 11. You Won't See Me Tonight (Featuring Aaliyah) 12. Dr. Knockboot 13. Nas Is Like 14. K-I-SS-I-N-G 15. Money Is My Bitch 16. Undying Love

Nas had to patch the album together because of bootlegging and I thought he did okay all in all - even if it does feels uneven and rushed at times. I Am... has a few commercial numbers in there all right but I wouldn't call it 'flashy and materialistic for the most part'. The first half is practically a continuation of It Was Written in tone, albeit more polished production-wise. Life Is Good has a few commercial numbers as well - the dodgy Summer On Smash and Reach Out for instance. The calculation was definitely evident on I Am... but it was hardly the last time Nas would eye up the charts and some radio airplay...

This album is weird. It has several quality tracks tossed in, but for the most part it was the epitome of cheesy flashy materialistic commercial hip-hop of the late '90s. I use to listen to this album all the time when it came out. I was younger and hadn't developed a sophistication in my taste in music yet. I am happy that Nas grew out of this phase and matured. Life is Good is brilliant. But yeah, I Am... probably is the worst production Nas have ever had on an album- just awful beats.

don't like the overall vibe of this one. it's got a dark vibe in general that begs for a kind of raw and gritty presentation, but the production is so polished and glossy...it sounds wrong.

This album is pretty decent, why so many fans criticize it? You Wont See Me Tonight, Hate me Now, Nas is Like, We Will Survive and Ghetto Prisoners are all good songs. Not to mention NY State of Mind 2.
