After Atlanta hardcore legends Blame Game disbanded, drummer Alex Lambert moved to Brooklyn and met up with guitarist Pat Foley, also a veteran of the Atlanta scene. The two had played together previously with The Flakes, an iconoclast tour-de-force with guitarist/vocalist Randy Castello (who went on to build an underground fixture in Atlanta booking, Tight Bros Network). The Flakes had been a truly free form of post-punk – without songwriting or even coordinated live shows – that gained a reputation for their cacophonous harmony, attracting Deerhunter and the Black Lips to the Atlanta scene. Their frequent collaborations and performances with both bands included a stunning rendition of A Day in the Life with Bradford Cox (Deerhunter) on vocals.
Lambert and Foley knew that The Flakes was a natural starting point for a new project in Brooklyn. After renting a practice space with Ryan Rasheed, longtime friend and dj for Prefuse 73, they put a craigslist add up for a bass player who could both rock and keep up with their Albert Ayler-inspired excursions. Their only response came from Brian House, a bassist previously active on the experimental scene in Göteborg, Sweden. With both jazz and noise experience, House provided the missing link for a new fusion of punk rock and free jazz.
