Not a racist song. Literally says "I only want to embrace your culture." Sounds unprejudiced to me.

I am Bengali and have been born and bred in England. I love Morrissey, and don't think this is a racist song, it's just how Morrissey sings from different people's points of views. And also he is the son of Irish immigrants, so we're kind of in the same boat. Anyway I think this song is great

I never bought that this song is racist. I always took it to be giving a voice to a depressed person who is baffled how someone who wasn't even born there is attempting to fit in when the he himself can't even fit in having lived his whole life there. The underlying idea isn't supposed to be that people should discriminate against the Bengali.

Re: Racism ---- Moz: "There are many people who are so obsessed wtih racism that one can't mention the word Bengali; it instantly becomes a racist song, even if you're saying, Bengali, marry me. But I still can't see any silent racism there." "Not even with the line, "Life is hard enough when you belong here"?" "Well, it is, isn't it?" "True, but that implies that Bengalis don't belong here, which isn't a very global view of the world." "In a sense it's true. And I think that's almost true for anybody. If you went to Yugoslavia tomorrow, you'd probably feel that you didn't belong there."

It's mildly racist in the sense he's saying the 'Bengali' doesn't 'belong here'. A chequered song reflective of his solo career that doesn't diminish what he achieved wth the Smiths- in fact it just heightens the contrast. Obviously, by this stage he had run out of good lyric ideas.

Me encanta cantar esta canción. "Brrrrrrreak the news to him gently...". Morrissey dibuja melodias como nadie, nada predecibles... Recientemente descubrí que comparto el mismo gusto con Nancy Sinatra
