“A Beginners Guide To Modesty Blaise” is a compilation album, which brings together a selection of recordings from the early years of British Pop group Modesty Blaise. Released in September of 1999, it was the band’s first release for the German Indie label Apricot.
With the exception of “The Most Beautiful”, all of the songs on the album had been released before, however, the versions contained on this album are mostly alternate mixes or different takes.
All of the album’s songs were written and produced by Modesty Blaise frontman Jonny Collins, except for “Christina Terrace” and “The Greatest Rock ‘N’ Roll Band In The World”, which are both taken from their debut single, which was produced by Edwyn Collins. “The Greatest Rock ‘N’ Roll Band In The World” also features Edwyn Collins on lead guitar.
In a review for Sorted magazine, Donnacha DeLong said of the album “It definitely makes a welcome change from the oh-so-boring guitar retro of Brit Pop.”
