my dad introduced me to this song one summer night. we were driving home from taco bell (or from eating dairy queen in the park) and it must've been quite late because it was so dark. the road was straight and went on for a bit until the next turn so he suddenly just opened the sunroof and stood up in the seat while still driving- with just the tips of his fingers on his right hand still touching the steering wheel. he had his head outside the top of the car like a madman and had me do it as well. it was such a surreal feeling- you know, you can barely breathe with that much wind coming at you at once- something like 30mph? i don't know if it's just this song or the memory i have thats associated with it but it consistently moves me to violent tears (i even feel it coming on just writing this). one day my father will die, my mother will die, and so will i and all of the people i may meet along the way there. regardless, i'll always just have to float on. life is terrifyingly uncertain.

it blows my mind that this song and take me out have kinda similar guitar riffs and similar vibes to their music video but they came out close enough together that I don't think MM were copying them and its possible they hadnt even heard it. something in the air i guess

A friend introduced me to this song and MM in 2008. In 2022, a few months before he died, I finally told him, "You shared Float On on AIM one day. At the time, I could not stand it. Sure I didn't finish the song. And yet I found myself years later loving that song and the band." He laughed, I laughed, we laughed for a while about it. With every listen of a Modest Mouse song, he's there on my mind, he lives on through every song, but especially Float On. I miss you Dallis, you may be gone but we'll all float on.
