Max Brand ( April 26 1896 in Lvov , † April 5 1980 in Langenzersdorf ) was an Austrian composer and pioneer of the synthesizer - and electronic music .
Max Brand in 1900 moved with his parents to Vienna . After attending several private schools, he studied composition from 1919 when Franz Schreker , first in Vienna and in Berlin (from 1920). In 1924 he returned to Vienna. That same year, he had heard a performance of Schoenberg's Wind Quintet, Opus 26, which impressed him greatly. Since that formative experience, he showed his work in some cases significantly influenced by his twelve-op about 5 ballads in his 10 (by Else Lasker-Schüler Hebrew ballads) of 1927 or in the Kyrie eleison for chorus a cappella in 1940.
Max Brand had its most successful period in the last years of the Weimar Republic . The culmination of the success he achieved with his curve opera Machinist Hopkins , on 13 Was premiered in April 1929 in Duisburg Statdttheater. Stylistically, this united work for the stage elements of Schreker's opera aesthetics of constructivism 'of the Second Viennese School and the New Objectivity in the sense Weill ( Threepenny Opera ) and Krenek ( Jonny plays ). Brands successful opera was set to 1932 in 37 locations on the board and translated into at least three languages. 1933, with the conductor was Karl Böhm planned premiere of his opera's Requiem at the Berlin State Opera of the new rulers banned because fire was of Jewish descent. Fire started in the early 30s in Vienna Mimoplastische theater for ballet and opera production at the Vienna Raimund Theater . In 1938 he fled from the Nazis through Prague and Switzerland to Brazil first. Here he met the composer Heitor Villa-Lobos know and worked together for a short time with him. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States, where he lived until 1975. He worked there, including director of a theater company and as Vice President of the American League of Authors and Composers from Austria. On 23 May 1944, his scenic oratorio The Gate (1941-43) premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In the 50 years he learned the electrical engineer Robert Moog know. He built the first synthesizer for Max Brand. In New York recording studio set up a fire in his apartment. He also was connected to the electronic studio in Cologne.
In 1975, Max Brand returned to Austria (near Vienna), where he on 4 April 1980 as an unknown musician died in Austria. He was in the fire hall Simmering cremated and there in the urn in a grove dedicated honorary grave (Division 5, Group 1, number 3) was buried.
