"Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” is a song recorded by Mariah Carey for her eighth studio album, Glitter. The track is a cover of Cherrelle’s’s 1984 recording of the song which was written and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
Jam & Lewis also produced Carey’s version. They had Mariah record new lead and backing vocals, but retained the original backing track to give the remake an authentically ‘80s vibe.
On her Glitter Interview CD, Mariah said:
People are coming up to me about – I did a cover of “Didn’t Mean To Turn You On” – and they’re like “Oh isn’t that a Robert Palmer song?” and I’m like ‘Well actually it’s a girl named Cherrelle – it was written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.” I was obsessed with that song. The cool thing for me, as a fan, and as a person who was a kid listening to that – Jimmy and Terry gave me that original track and I sang on top of it and Terry was actually the one who sang those background vocals and he resang them for me. It was a really cool experience".
