Stephen Stills took a break from a musical career 'that was spinning out of control' and moved to England. He bought a house that was owned by Ringo Starr who bought it from Peter Sellers. The house came with a gardener: Johnny. (Another tidbit about Johnny, the gardener: Sellers used his experience knowing Johnny as part of his inspiration for the character he played in the movie "Being There".)
Stills dumped the house a couple of years later, it was said, due to the excessive taxation in England.
As for the song, and its rendering by the author, it is likely one of the sweetest of his ballads, joyfully played and paints a picture that puts you there as he sees it.
