Biography

M. Ostermeier writes and records music in Baltimore, Maryland where he is a professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

He was the main songwriter of the 1990’s shoegaze/post-rock band Should, whose debut release A Folding Sieve was on the Austin, Texas label ND.

He has recently mixed albums for Nebraska’s post-punk legends For Against (Shade Side Sunny Side, Never Been) and folk-pianist Brynn Andre. He is co-owner of Words On Music, an independent record label of international post-punk, dreampop, post-rock, and chamber pop artists founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1998.

Although continuing to work with Should, M. Ostermeier’s recent solo material has taken an experimental and ambient turn. His compositions are often built from skeletal piano melodies that are augmented with electronics and acoustic recordings to evoke a melancholic stillness.

His debut recordings under his own name will appear in early 2010 with an EP on Hibernate and a full-length CD on Words On Music.
