Biography
The Birth of Lunar Plexus
In 1995, Karen Joy Ellis and Dante Ferrarini (guitarist/producer), who were both students at the time, united for their love of the experimental. The band had set its sound apart with meldings of organic and electronic instrumentation, in the most unconventional of ways.
Shortly after the release of their debut ep, Sweeter, they began receiving support from major Boston radio stations, such as WFNX and WBCN. In addition to commercial radio airplay in New England, Lunar Plexus charted in the CMJ top 30 for dozens of college radio stations. In 1997, they reached listeners abroad, hitting #1 on a major Denmark radio station for their single "Sweeter". The band achieved outstanding press, appeared on several national CD compilations, and were selected to showcase for nearly every US music conference. Karen Joy was nominated for "Outstanding Female Vocalist" at the Kahlua Boston Music Awards (1998). All of these events had occurred within a year's time. In 1999, the band took home the Boston Phoenix/WFNX Best Music Poll Award for "Best Electronica/DJ Act" and was also nominated for "Outstanding New Rock Band" at The Kahlua Boston Music Awards. Lunar Plexus entered the world of music publishing, receiving multiple sync licensing placements on major network television shows such as Passions, Sunset Beach, One Life to Live, MTV's "Undressed", and The Jamie Kennedy Experiment.
Karen Joy left Boston to return to Philadelphia in the Fall of 2001, and so the band parted ways. Dante moved to New York City shortly after.
