Michigan Boy Boat is Lil Yachty’s third commercial mixtape and the follow-up to his November 2020 release, Lil Boat 3.5. The Michigan-themed record is nearly two years in the making.
Michigan Boy Boat is derived from Lil Yachty’s love for and deep connection to the rap scenes of both Detroit and Flint, Michigan. The tape is essentially a collaborative record between Yachty and several of the state’s brightest upcoming rappers.
Aside from Tee Grizzley, one of Detroit’s biggest stars and Yachty’s frequent collaborator, Lil Boat calls on many of the states underground and lesser known talent, including KrispyLife Kidd, Louie Ray, BabyTron, Rio da Yung OG, RMC Mike, Sada Baby, YN Jay, Babyface Ray, Veeze, and Baby Smoove. The only non-Michigan native on the mixtape is Swae Lee.
Yachty first teased the concept of this project in a tweet on June 9, 2019, claiming that it would drop before Lil Boat 3. However, LB3 was delayed until May 2020; as a result, the Detroit-themed tape was indefinitely delayed.
Yachty revived the idea of the Michigan-themed tape on October 19, 2020, coinciding with the YouTube release of his Sada Baby collaboration, “Not Regular.”
Yachty surprise-announced Michigan Boy Boat on April 21, 2021, less than two days before its release, alongside its official artwork and a teaser trailer.
On the day of the mixtape’s release, Boat released The Boat Show Season 2 Episode 7, which is Part 1 of a documentary of MBB’s creative process.
Yachty’s connection to Michigan officially began with his March 2017 Tee Grizzley collaboration, “From the D to the A.” Over the next four years, Yachty built a strong rapport with several of the state’s underground rappers, collaborating with many of them. The mutual respect culminated in the release of this unifying mixtape.
