Biography

There’s a societal narrative about “getting over” negative or traumatic events. Perhaps that has the effect of adding a layer of shame to complex emotions, as if you are wrong for feeling them. Yet maybe darkness can be a place of beauty, virtue and hope in its own right.

A Bristol-based three-piece formed in 2019, Lessens’ ethos of reverb-drenched reductivism serves up brooding quiet and haunting melancholy. Spacious textures stalk the ground from sombre to seismic, with sporadic eruptions of vitriol and almost accidental happiness.

This ethos is inspired not just by the ceaseless noise of modern life, but by the tension between beauty, fragility and anxiety. It’s about clarity, simplification and sparsity. What emerges from that framework falls somewhere between post-punk and post-rock.

Loud is made louder by quiet. Quiet is made quieter by loud. Give melody space. Lessens.

Lessens are:
Jamie Harper: guitar, vocals
Ben Curtis: bass guitar
Andy Holliday: drums
