Larry Gales is a well-known double bassist, serving primarily as a sideman. He played with the Thelonious Monk Quartet for some time, including on the classic album Straight, No Chaser. He also did one album each with Charlie Rouse and Bennie Green, and released one album as a band leader, A Message From Monk. Gales passed away in September of 1995.
