Biography

Jo Strauss is writing songs which, as he states, "are tearing the heart out of the chest, throwing it on the floor and should trample around on them!" Bound in honour to Germany's capital Berlin, there is not only lyrical melancholia, but also an appropriate dose of black humour in his songs. It's not a rarity that Jo Strauss finishes his compositions with a surprising turn, that lets the laughter stick in the audience's throats. Listeners are expected to hear morbide Wienerlieder, grave philosophy and rough ragging of all kind, not only in Strauss' songs, but also in between the tracks. Strauss, who studied philosophy and is a professed materialist, preferably tells about the gruesomeness of daily life, the death of public space and every now and then of love, which is known to be very cruel sometimes. The native Upper Austrian looks like a café littérateur of the Viennese Moderne, sounds like a 70-years-old professional smoker, and has a stage presence as even someone like Bon Jovi would wish for. Jo Strauss is accompanied by his good-bad-mood orchestra, which is that "supa" (great) that it never ever played a wrong note in public and performs everything from brutal noise compositions to heartbreaking super-down-tempo ballads.
