Insignificance is the fourth solo album by American musician Jim O’Rourke, released on November 19, 2001, by Drag City. Compared to the orchestral chamber pop of Eureka, this album takes a more guitar-driven, rock-oriented approach, while retaining O’Rourke’s sharp songwriting and studio precision.
Named after the Nicolas Roeg film of the same title, Insignificance blends classic rock influences with lyrical wit and emotional detachment. The album features contributions from members of Sonic Youth and Wilco, including Glenn Kotche and Jeff Tweedy, giving it a fuller band sound with dynamic interplay and warm analog textures.
Praised for its melodic clarity and sonic depth, Insignificance showcases O’Rourke’s ability to craft accessible yet intricate songs, often undercut with dry humor and existential unease. It’s widely seen as one of his most accomplished and approachable solo works.
