January Carl Christian Maegaard ( 14 April 1926 - 27 November 2012 ) was a Danish musicologist and composer.

His musical career started at the Royal Danish Academy of Music where he studied piano, bass, composition and music theory, and then to continue music studies at the University of Copenhagen . After studies of Arnold Schoenberg's music, including in its own repository, he was dr. phil in 1972 with his thesis on Schoenberg. While studying, he taught at the conservatory 1953-1958 and then he became a teacher at the university from 1961-1996, from 1971 as professor. In the years 1974-1981 he was involved in several universities in the United States as a visiting professor.

The researcher and teacher must necessarily publish its opinions and findings, and it has Maegaard made in full. Through numerous books, articles and polemical speeches, he has been an important player in the development of musical composition since 1950. In the years 1957-1959 he was President of the Young Composers' Society ( DUT ) and for many years he was the editorial committee of the Danish Music Magazine , of which he was a frequent contributing. Over the years it has been to several reviews of books, sheet music, LPs and CDs as well as a variety of music theory articles, not to mention several very intense pennefejder with other music personalities on various music questions.
