Biography
Humidifier started out back in 1987. The four original members - John King, Jim Wilbur, Denis Saulnier, and Joe Ryan - were attending Connecticut's Fairfield University at the time and would play gigs at the local bars or at various friends' house parties. During those college years, they released some demos and managed to put out a full-length LP entitled Misery's Redeeming.
After college, Joe Ryan left the band and Humidifier became a 3-piece, releasing their second official release in the form of a 7-inch EP entitled Louder Than Your Mom. And the next year they recorded a second EP entitled Gazer. The years following would find the members of the band becoming more involved in their personal careers and individual musical endeavors.
John King went on to sing for Our American Cousins, and then on to Spent. After the demise of Spent, he continued writing music and began playing out on his own — while also spending some time involved in producing and engineering.
Jim Wilbur went on to play guitar for Superchunk.
Denis Saulnier played for a bit in Glen Echo and Pee Wee Fist, and then with Eric Salt & The Electric City.
Although the band itself is inactive, Jim, John, and Denis tend to get together every so often to record — and sometimes even to play a few shows. The most significant time this happened was back in 1996, when they put out another full-length album entitled Nothing Changes. This particular album reflected the band's age, as it was a more mature effort then previous releases — yet it still paid homeage to the old days by including some reworked versions of the classic Humidifier songs, "Rubber Gloves" and "Nicotine".
Today Humidifier is not together. But the guys like to stay in touch whenever their schedules allow it.
