Biography
Influenced by a wide range of bands such as Radiohead, Spacemen 3, Can and the Verve, the Caribbean-born, New York-based producer and songwriter Leo Lugo is the central force behind High Pines, a one-man-band project he started in 2011 along with the release of the ethereal self-produced We Are Humans EP, a 16-minute-long EP that delivers straight psychedelic pop songs that explores alienation and subconscious state of mind.
Leo Lugo was born Jottin Leo Lugo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on May 10, 1984. His early influences were the 60’s and 70’s Spanish pop artists such as Julio Iglesias, Camilo Sesto and Basilio. Those same artists served him as a vehicle to discover American and British music of the likes of the Beatles, the Doors, David Bowie and the Velvet Underground just to mention a few. These bands made Lugo more curious about songwriting, arrangements and melodies. In 2006, he formed the band Loin an experimental-psychedelic-space rock band that consisted of Leo Lugo (vocals, rhythm guitar) Pavel Colon (keyboards, piano) and Mitchell C. (lead guitar). They released two albums and played a handful of shows at local clubs and radio stations in Santo Domingo, the song “Satellite” from their second album “Hypnotized” was featured on a TV/Web ad for the shoe designer Vince Camuto. Another pivotal event happened in 2007, when Lugo moved from his hometown island to New York City and he decided to start his own record label Mind Pattern to release all of his High Pines material.
A year after the release of’ “We Are Humans” High Pines surfaced with the first full-length album, a “Self-titled” due in October 2013.
