Dai folk musician Gen Dequan (Chinese: 哏德全; May 1958 - September 2008 ) was a hulusi player. Known as "King of the Gourd", Gen Dequan was instrumental in popularizing the folk music of the Dai people, and making their music a household name throughout China, synonymous with the cultural diversity of Yunnan Province. Throughout his career he toured many cities and countries, sharing the musical traditions of his people.
Gen Dequan was born in a village of Lianghe County near Mengyang River in Yunnan province. At the age of 10 he started to learn the hulusi (cucurbit flute). He had many students, both Chinese and foreign. He participated in the main hulusi music of pantomime Water-splashing Festival held by Yunnan Cultural Office. Yunnan Audio & Vedio Publisher has released his solo works, among them "Amorous Cucurbit Flute".
