duul_drv is s. arden hill, a sound maker | minimalist, and painter living in the intersecting and isolated climate of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As sound maker his compositions attempt to fuse the aesthetics and method of his paintings with the dynamics of sound. By layering sounds actualized in digital software with edited field recordings duul_drv creates visual compositions that have been paralleled to camping, scuba diving, long drives on hot days, and watching bubbles floating outside a window. The "dusty and cracked" texture that's found in his compositions can be attributed to the overwhelming sense of Location that Winnipeg offers. Winnipeg feels old and run down, more like a prairie town than a prosperous city. In this sense i get the impression that we are living through old photographs found in flea markets, and objects of nostalgia.
This aesthetic can be heard in the quiet stretched sounds, the dull hiss of the crackling white noise, and the fragments of constructed beats.
duul_drv has recently performed at digidome a sound/video festival in saskatchewan, canada, at Salaeco in San Juan, Puerto rico, and at MUTEK: music, sound and new technologies, in quebec, canada. As well as his contribution 'clean' on line, He will also have a 20 minute contribution to 'object, set, and Motion' on chicago label Aperstaartje. Other projects for him include a remix of cornucopia, contribution to Another Kind of Language and tribute to Andrei Tarkovsky and debut full lengths on ‘windowsil’ and ‘and/OAR’.
s. arden hill studied linguistics for his undergraduate degree and is now finishing up his bachelors of education.
