Biography
Defused is a progressive rock band from Southern Illinois. The band was founded in 2006 by Michael Hicks who, by himself, wrote and recorded the first three Defused albums until he was later joined by Brock Baltzell, Connor Burge and Derek Burwell for their fourth effort The Point of Beginning.
Early Defused CDs contained many electronica influences, even computer generated guitars on the album The Virus of Life. After the release of the band's third album What I've Become, Michael posted a blog on Myspace talking about his disappointment with the album, and how he was ready to make changes for Defused. During the months to follow drummer Brock Baltzell joined Defused. Together they wrote the majority of the future album The Point of Beginning. Later on guitarist Connor Burge joined and bassist Derek Burwell to form the first line-up of the new Defused.
On January 13th, 2009 The Point of Beginning was released digitally on major online stores iTunes and Amazon. The album was generally well received from critics and fans alike despite being entirely instrumental unlike the previous CDs.
Altough some electronic influences are still present the techno side of Defused is almost completely in the past. The new Defused can possibly best be described as a "technical guitar band" with odd key signatures, guitar driven songs and often highly dramatic and dark music.
Michael stated on a video blog that the band will go back to record a new album in April of 2009. The new CD is expected to be released in 2010.
