How did this song get written? Well, the Sometimes When We Touch Songfacts says: Dan Hill was 19 years old and living in a Canadian suburb, rather naive about girls. Surprise, he had landed a 22-year old girlfriend, but he was having trouble keeping up with her - she was already looking to other men. So he decided that his songwriting skill would win the day, and he wrote this ballad with the intention of "blowing her away." He then called her on the phone and sang the song he'd written for her over the phone. When he finished, a moment of silence passed on the other end of the line, and she responded with words to the effect of "For a nineteen-year-old, you're way too god-damned intense. I'm dumping you." And that was the end of that.
