Biography

Want some mainstream jazz?

Talk about the convergence of major jazz influences in the local scene. This is what you get when you put the "Senyores" together– Tots Tolentino, Meong Pacana, Mar Dizon and Tateng Katindig. Spice up the already explosive group with the sultry voice of Chedi Vergara, and you get living, breathing and kick-ass jazz embodied in Buhay. And it's all-Filipino.

The members seem to have taken particular fancy on creating their own sound in this album. Drummer Mar's compositions, Flunk and Kalabukab, are, as expected, filled with the beats and counterbeats typical of the genre. Suffice it to say, his cuts turn out playful. On the other hand, Keyboardist Tateng came out with melodious numbers with Tots literally playing with the sax. For his Part, Tots re-arranged some of the old favorites with a touch of freshness.

A personal favorite is their version of Superstar ng Buhay Ko. It has a soothing calming effect like the aroma of lavender, totally different from the original rendition by (HELP! SINO ORIGINAL NITO ?). If new lyrics were made for this arrangement by Tots, this could pass for a really romantic ambiance music. (Pang-"popping-the-question" ito, bok!)

Two originals by Tots, Tiramisu and Y2K… what can I say? Can I just sit back and listen to this stuff?

And Chedi… you make me think of Michelle Pfieffer on top of that grand piano. *sigh*

Behind all them, there was Meong, holding the beat while the rest were flying away with their parts.

On the downside, there were times when I was wondering why the sound of an instrument couldn't sustain its volume. Well, there is a way to find out how they should sound like– the Buhay gigs!

If you are a jazzer, you oughtta have this.
