Tyler arranged a new version of the Universal Pictures logo fanfare originally composed by Jerry Goldsmith for the studio's 100th anniversary, which debuted with the film "The Lorax" (2012). He also composed the Marvel Studios logo theme used from 2013 to 2016, which premiered with "Thor: The Dark World" (2013), for which he also composed the score. Tyler composed the NFL Sunday Countdown Theme for ESPN and the Formula One theme, which is also used in Formula 2 and Formula 3. He has composed music for television series including "Yellowstone."

Tyler won the International Film Music Critics Association Composer of the Year award in 2014. His composition for the film "Last Call" earned him an Emmy nomination, a gold record, and membership in the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. As of 2017, films scored by Tyler had grossed approximately 12 billion dollars worldwide, ranking him among the top 10 highest-grossing film composers.

He was born and raised in Orange County, California. Tyler is the grandson of art director Walter H. Tyler. His early musical influences include his pianist grandmother. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master's degree from Harvard University. He taught himself to play multiple instruments, including drums, piano, guitar, bass, cello, world percussion, synthesizer, charango, and bouzouki.

After graduating from Harvard, Tyler began scoring feature films. Encouraged by Robert Kraft, his first film score was for the independent film "Bartender" (1997), directed by Gabe Torres.
