Bob Webb was an American musician, known for his expertise in clawhammer banjo, guitar, and the MacCann duet concertina. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in the folk and maritime music scenes, with performances spanning from local hootenannies to international music festivals across North America and Europe.
Webb was a key member of the True & Trembling String Band on the West Coast and participated in two tours with the young Tom Waits. His repertoire included songs of the sea, old-time ballads, and traditional music of the American and Canadian West, making him a respected figure in these musical genres.
In addition to his performances, Webb was also a dedicated music historian. His most notable contribution to the field was his book Ring the Banjar: The Banjo in America From Folklore to Factory (1984), which was published to accompany a significant exhibition on the history of the banjo at the MIT Museum.
Webb's work as a musician and historian has left a lasting impact on the preservation and appreciation of American musical traditions. His contributions continue to influence the folk and maritime music communities.
