“Fire” is the second single and fourth song off of Black Pumas' self-titled debut album. In the song, the narrator presents the longing (either emotional, sexual, or both) that a “lover on mind” is experiencing as an emergency similar to a fire or a medical emergency, and presents himself as the solution to that emergency. Though he tries to present the emergency as her problem, it is clear that the longing is really his problem, and that she is the solution to it, rather than the other way around.
Musically, “Fire” features a spaghetti western inspired guitar riff, and the brass playing in the background could be inspired by Johnny Cash’s hit “Ring of Fire,” which also features heavy brass and also depicts love as a burning fire. Also, Jimi Hendrix has a song called “Fire,” and since a later song on Black Pumas is called “Touch the Sky,” this song could also be inspired by Jimi.
