new Arctopus coming soon according to Colin... and apparently this one is no amps and no drum kit? he also stated it was "absolutely unplayable" -- apparently referring to there being more experimenting with layering simultaneous parts on top of each other. so perhaps something bending more into an Arctopus spin on a more neo-classical style. needless to say i'm really looking forward to seeing this next evolution on their formula after Hapeleptic Overtrove showed off a really different side of their style.

I like the playfulness of their latest, I just wish it felt less like the band warming up...more crescendos/builds would help

As much as I hate how chaotic their recent material is, Skullgrid seems like it'd be absolutely incredible to study to. Really keeps the brain active, love how the longer tracks develop.

is it just me or is Cognitive Emancipation a little more "groovy" compared to their other works? the second half especially has lots of really compelling groove segments.

Turns out the new drummer is Jason Bauers from Odd Senses-era Psyopus. How do they keep getting all these awesome drummers?

People arguing that there is a structure under the cluster-fuck of this band are the best. I've been into brutal and technical stuff for ages now, and I still don't know why I should dig deeper and deeper in this shit to try and make sense of it. Sure, you can tell us that they play scales, respect their time signature and stuff. But technicality like this is just plain fucking boring, so who gives a shit anyway...

I recommend seeing this type of music in a love setting if you have the chance. I felt like Krallice were very boring until I saw them live; once I saw them play my opinion changed greatly and now they're one of my favorite bands.

New drummer and two new songs (although one was from the Metal Injection videos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gJfLZn-D8s and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEx9QAVNE-w

Ron Jarzombek is about the only person that can do hypertechnicality in enjoyable ways for me, personally. That said, BLotted Science is fucking brilliant.

well it was written by Walter who's new to the band but not the style. Colin and Mike can obviously care less what anyone thinks... which is cool because that means they're writing for themselves and their enjoyment. their sound reminds me of a mixture of classical and 90s videogame. I remember seeing Colin updating the SNES games he was playing through on his myspace before skullgrid.. which is when I started associating their sound as so. Even though it sounds more suitable for Ron Jarzombek, I'd love to hear Colin (Indricothere) or Mike (Direwolf) cover Contra III - The Alien Wars nesting in the sands or the old cyber steel mill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUjQ3QSKtNA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Plo3YL1CATM

Alright, so there is a method to their madness then. It just sounds like trying way too hard from guys that really don't have to and too dissonant for me to find it pleasant. The way they compose is just very avant garde then I suppose, and it just kinda sounded like an amusingly clusterfuck train wreck. I actually give props for their directness, it's nice hearing a band give a direct fuck you when they're irritated.

because you hear zero structure, doesn't mean that it isn't there. here's a good example, posted by b...ta on their facebook last year https://www.facebook.com/beholdthearctopus/posts/10151210521026709?stream_ref=10 they're also currently working on a book of scores which will break each song down.

The thing is, these guys are so talented they suck now. I hear zero structure, it's the work of people trying so hard that the art just suffers entirely in the end.

You know, I heard their old material and thought "This actually seems very well thought out..." After listening to Horrorscension, I have lost all fucking respect for these guys haha. I never knew music theory mastery detached from composition could be so horrific.

i think i might love Horrorscension more than their other albums, and that's saying a lot, because i fuckin' love Skullgrid to death

Completely obnoxious, chaotic and dissonant.. and I'm fucking loving it. Great production values too, rarely see that on CD's/MP3 these days.
