Biography
Apollo are an emerging blues-rock band hailing from Swansea, the young band are consistently impressing on the local live scene and building a strong reputation as a live band. Rooted in classic rock, Apollo’s eclectic sound is a mixture of old school staples Led Zeppelin, Free, and Jimi Hendrix combined with a confident brand of improvisation which is seldom explored by contemporary acts. The live set sees the band combine rock and roll, delta blues, heavy rock, and funky rhythm and blues. The band are constantly finding that audiences respond enthusiastically to the music, often stating the fact that few bands are doing what Apollo do at the moment. Lead singer Sam Linthorne is from Reading and, having now finished at Swansea Uni has performed and recorded with a number of notable artists in the Swansea area. Guitarist OJ is a second year student originally from Cardiff. Along with Sam, OJ is the bluesman of Apollo with influences ranging far and deep into the delta. Bassist Tom O'Keefe is a second year student at Swansea. Hailing from Devon, he is Apollo's most exotic member coming from over 100 miles away! Drummer Kieran, also a second year student at Swansea, has previously played with several bands around his home near Chepstow and forms the other half of a formidable rhythm section! Kieran and OJ met whilst living in halls from 2005-2006 and, after a year of auditioning in vain, they came across Sam at a local Monday night blues jam. After joining him on stage just once, the band agreed to sign up for the Uplands Tavern open mic the following night, embarking on a mostly improvised and extremely well received 20 minute set under the banner “The Michael Buerke Band”(conceived on the way to the gig). Following the next week’s open mic night the band were offered the chance of their own extended gig at the Tav, filling prestigious Saturday night slot, and with that encouragement Apollo was born!
With a new EP recently recorded (available from www.myspace.com/ukapollo) and a a number of gigs in Swansea and Cardiff in the pipeline the future looks exciting for the young band.
