    Klaipėda, Klaipėdos Apskritis, Lithuania

There are at least two bands or artists named Angelou. 1) Angelou, a british folk band, and 2) Angelou, a Lithuanian-British alternative R&B singer-songwriter, and 3) Angelou, an American Hip-Hop artist

1) Angelou, a British folk band, was formed in the mid-'90s by Holly Lerski and guitarist Jo Baker.

They debuted on Boo Hewerdine's independent label Haven Records in 1997 with the Hallelujah EP. Joined by Phil Di Palma and Chris Evans, they followed this up with 2 critically acclaimed albums, ‘Automiracles’ (1998) and ‘While You Were Sleeping’ (2000).

They toured Spain extensively in 2001 promoting their Spanish 'best of' release, 'Midnight Witcheries' with new members Cath Evans and Ann Richardson. The band returned a second time for the Benicassim Festival 2001 tour, promoting their 'Summertime E.P.'

After their return to England they signed to Sanctuary Records and recorded the poppier 3rd album, 'Life Is Beautiful', releasing it under record company instruction in Lerski's name. The album finally broke Lerski and Angelou into the mainstream through heavy radio support for their 2 singles. Angelou left Sanctuary Records in 2005 through lack of support for the record, and the company dissolved soon after, to eventually be bought out by the Universal Group.

Angelou broke up in 2006, however Lerski continues to write, record and release under her own name.

2) Angelou, is an alternative R&B singer-songwriter based in London, UK and Vilnius, Lithuania. Although no one in the family was professionally occupied with music, her father was the first person who introduced her to different genres of it. “I grew up surrounded mostly by the vinyl sounds of blues and rock, as my father used to play it in our household all the time. I fell in love with electric guitars of and crunchy voices of Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger, Guns and Roses. Not long after that my brother introduced me to the scene of Western R&B and Hip-Hop scene, which I instantly felt the passion and love for. The mixture of these genres had a great influence on my musical development and also has a great reflection on my music now.”

Recording and editing her music or video material in her room, Angelou has always been very DIY. “I was constantly chasing the idea of being as much self-reliant as possible. I am just too impatient. I would rather learn how to do specific things myself than wait for someone else to do it for me.”

Angelou began to develop her sound, style, and persona just a few years back after moving to United Kingdom. After that she self-released the single “Lovetrack,” which features New Jersey-based rapper Ess Vee.

In 2016 Angelou has announced to release a debut four-song visual EP entitled “Vision A” starting with lead single “GRIP”. The sound is crafting a mysterious, foggy atmosphere where anything can happen accompanied by honey-soothing-vocals on top. Intimate and highly sensuous, it is blending elements of a darker spectrum of alternative RnB.

“At the end of the day I try to keep it as honest as possible, I am not afraid of being vulnerable if I feel like and I stress a lot on a sensuousness while describing my sound.“

3) Angelou, American Hip-Hop artist based in Waterbury, CT. From humble beginnings in the “hood” Angelou expresses his real life in his tracks. Starting his journey all the way back in 1972 where Angelou realized he had (in his words) a god given talent for song writing, poetry and singing, and in that instance Angelou knew he had to scurry to the trap to record some real hood classics, the streets needed to hear this. That’s when in the summer of 1972 Angelou started working on his first album which he planned to call it “Yo Tengo Niños En El Sótano” which in English translates to “I Have Children in the Basement”. However midway through Angelou’s recording of his album was cut short due to legal troubles which saw him incarcerated for 50 years, he actually had kids in his basement.

A free man 50 years later and Angelou’s first matter of business is to finish his album, but now a changed man and ex-pedophile, Angelou decided to scrap everything and start from scratch. With this new mindset Angelou begins working on a series of singles, first single titled “Snow Globe” which he released on June 3rd of 2022, which June 3rd happens to be Angelou’s birthday. And as of recently Angelou has released his second single Titled “Moon Shuttle”. According to the man himself this is just the beginning of something bigger he’s planning (hopefully it doesn’t involve children 😦). Despite little to no success and major money problems Angelou seems to stay optimistic so we can only wait to see what happens next.
