Biography
With the purpose of playing his own compositions, the double bass player/composer André Carvalho decided to form this group in 2008.
The repertoire was specifically written to this formation and it shows clear influences of contemporary jazz, classical music, contemporary music as well as Portuguese music.
Among the concerts already performed by André Carvalho 5tet a special highlight goes to: Centro Cultural Vila-Flor (Guimarães), Centro Cultural Vila das Aves, Espaço Cultural Pedro Remy, third and fourth edition of Festival Outjazz in Lisbon, Jazz ao Norte, Casa do Livro, Ondajazz, Fábrica do Braço de Prata, Bejazz.
In May 2011, participating in the Bucharest International Jazz Competition, the group won the "Best Group" award.
In September 2010 the group recorded at Timbuktu Studios in Lisbon 8 original compositions of André Carvalho. This recording is going to be released in 2011 by Tone of a Pitch and has as special guest Mariana Norton, the Lisbon-based singer that also sometimes joins the group in live performances.
