Biography
Amy's career was kick started when she was sought out and asked to add her exceptional vocal talent to a local bands recording and subsequent live performances. It was during this time that she started writing her own material with a view to performing under her own name. From 2000 onwards Amy Sawers has honed and defined her sound through extensive gigging and a melding of her broad influences into a satisfyingly unique sound of melody driven contemporary Alt Country rock n roll.
Although Amy has, from time to time, performed solo she is unequivocally 'not' a twee acoustic artist, as some tender audience members, having seen a name on a poster, could testify to. Amy has her moments of sweet melancholy but one should never sit back and expect 30 minutes of such. Amy likes little more than the comfort of slinging on her telecaster stamping a four on the floor intro and ploughing through a set of songs that can both melt and invigorate and audience in equal measures.
She is ably assisted in her creative pursuit by Hendy on drums and Stuart Hossack on bass and additional vocals. Hendy's drums provide a machine like backbone around which Amy carves out her hooks and melodies whilst Stuart's Bass twists and turns about the guitar in a complimentary melodic manner, with his backing vocals skilfully complementing Amy's beautiful voice, a voice that can move effortlessly from breathy whisper to a soulful soar barely in need of a microphone. The three of them play entirely for the song!
The combination of Amy's cinematic tale telling heartfelt lyrics, incredible voice and a combined sound bigger than three people should make have ensured that Amy's gigs are always keenly attended and she continues to build upon a loyal fanbase. A list of her support slots should be testimony enough: Alabama 3, Roddy Frame, Gary Lucas, Tom Hingley, JJ Gilmore, Deborah Bonham, Dawn Of The Replicants, Driveblind, Cosmic Rough Riders, The Hazey Janes, Mohair, Fans Of Kate. Proof alone that promoters and venues along with her audience hold Amy in very high esteem.
Although performing live is Amy's first love she has, from time to time, been gently coaxed into the studio to record. Fat Hippy records in Aberdeen have supported her keenly from an early stage and all her releases to date have been through this independent local label. The ep FEATHER (03) and mini album 'So Called Love Stories' (04) have sold exceptionally and have proved essential in helping Amy's radio airplay grow. She is now a regular on Northsound Radio sitting comfortably on many playlists as well as being given the occasional invitation to perform a live session. Taking this recognition of Amy's talent as a songwriter and performer and coupling it with her extensive gigging resulted in Amy being invited to perform at Northsound radio's prestigious 25th year anniversary awards ceremony at The Music Hall in Aberdeen late July 06. Some small mention should also be given here to the fact Amy picked up the award for 'Next Big Thing' few doubt this. Amy was later seen bounding off into the night clutching the award to celebrate with a few glasses of red.
During this latter half of 2006 Amy has been writing new material, to add to her extensive repertoire, now independently recorded and produced. The new material sees her growing as a songwriter and artist refining and defining her sound with a mature confidence. The much anticipated, as yet untitled, four track ep will be launched January 2007 at The Lemon Tree in Aberdeen.
