Biography
Amaradio are a four piece pop punk/powerpop band from San Dimas, CA, and with just a little luck this band could easily rise above the masses and land a record deal; a few listens to their five song EP She's Got You is a testament to that. The band doesn't have a web presence, but instead a Myspace in which they admit to drawing influences from Weezer and the Foo Fighters. That's not a bad place to start when describing their sound. At it's core it's an attempt at power pop with slap-happy melodies a la Weezer and sinewy edges a la the Foo Fighters.
Their greatest asset is probably lead singer Ryan Amaradio, whose voice has enough to break away from the mass of pop/punk stalwarts. It's commanding and compelling enough to keep the listener wondering what's up next, and their music, while not entirely original and borderline formulaic, has enough surprises and enough uniqueness to at least make a claim for authenticity. Amaradio have the same power/pop intensity that California's own Sugarcult possess. A recent review cross-referenced both The Early November and Better than Ezra, and after a few listens, the Better than Ezra claims actually seem more sincere than those of The Early November. There's more Top 40, mainstream accessibility in "She's Got You" than that of a band like Punchline (read: formulaic pop/punk).
"Move to the Sound" could certainly land on radio playlists as should title track, "She's Got You." "The Truth in Secrets" and "Take This City" are more about the band's ability to flex its guitar muscle than provoke any discussion about Billboard-charting singles. But considering the size of California and the number of bands out there, Amaradio certainly deserve some attention in the next few months, if not for their music alone, at least for their EP's cover art. Top notch, fellas. (Reviewed by: Gregory Robson (03/04/08))
