Biography

    2006 – present (18 years)

There are at least four artists with this name:

1) Alkahest is a a Brooklyn based metal band that combines elements of doom, sludge, stoner, ambient and psych into music that is something entirely unique. The band was formed in 2009 by guitarists Jon Powell & Nikhil Kamineni (Quiet Lights) with the intention of writing and performing music that is both crushing, hypnotizing, subtle and intricate all at the same time. The lineup was soon completed by Rajah Marcelo on drums, Adam Campanella on bass, and the vocals of Chris Dialogue (Queen Elephantine, Terror Eyes). Their debut full length album Milk & Morphine will be released on Sept 23rd.

2) Alkahest is a metal from Genoa, Italy.

3) Alkahest is an Industrial/electronic music project from Pikeville, Kentucky. Not content enough with just listening to music, the Alkahest music project was started in 2004 by Jimmy Rowe from Pikeville, Kentucky as a way to express himself musically in the best way he could: with a laptop in his bedroom. Early releases took the form of hip hop and trip-hop beats, but now inspired by a wider variety of genres, including ambience, industrial, and post-rock. In 2008, Alkahest released …Substance, a split EP with friend Mitchell West's Level 6 Wizard project. Alkahest is currently working on music, with the full length debut The Universal Solvent due out late 2009.

4) Alkahest was raised in Penang, Malaysia. Started messing around with home-recording with an old organ and a mic with King Lazy aka ujin approximately 16 years ago which led to the country's first homegrown Hip-Hop act, Suspicious, to play live back in the mid 90s through the underground scene while cover songs of international artists were filthering stages. "In the Tradition of Myth and Legend" and a subsequent Anesthetic Solution demo were self recorded on cassettes and distributed by the band (Chief Running Herb/Soul Merchant, Ratty-D/Sub Nyne, King Lazy and Spaceman Spliff) with tracks such as "North Side Thing ", "Plan X", "If The Shoe Fits", "Words to Ill With", "Phats", "Ill Flow", "Lyrics on the Brain" to name a few, reaching heads in Hawaii, and bootlegged to the south peninsular and East Malaysia by a couple of bandits from Borneo. Their sounds evolved from an RY10, countless pause-deck loops, a distortion pedal and a cheap-ass mic to computer programmed tunes back when CD-ROMs were not a common feature for desktops; cutting-edged tracks were grown and produced in spite of the obvious lack of props.

In the early years of the entity's quest to find God, it was Soul Merchant that came to ponder on questions like, ""If all energy contains consciousness, then all energy contains information; energy would be consciousness/data and information which rides a wave." Then will it be possible to attach certain information using multi-dimensional symbols of certain healing properties/intent/focus, via the Observer on to a track? Will these properties polarize upon observation? Or will it unravel and go back into energy?"…

Now after journeys afar, Alkahest currently resides in Kuala Lumpur still cooking up self-contained tunes for personal thought forms; frequency specific, downtempos for chilled mind-melding moments - collapsing free energy with free information into life.

To the Observer that sits in the lower cerebellum.

So be that.

'Nuff said.
