Biography
Alex Rae is an Atlanta, GA based experimental/electronic musician.
Rae began his musical career as a classical pianist and guitarist, but was bitten by the electronic music bug in the mid-nineties. Exposed both to academic electronic music in college while studying under Ivan Tcherepnin during the day, and to the sounds of underground and experimental techno and jungle in clubs and at raves at night, it wasn't long before he was producing and performing his own electronic music.
In 1996 Rae joined forces with Boston's Toneburst Collective and began a career of producing and performing high-quality abstract and experimental beats. Working solo and with others, he honed his live performance skills, using a basic hardware synth/sequencer/sampler setup, as well as writing a number of more "academic" pieces. Indeed, his electronic music has always determinedly straddled the fence between "academic" and "dance" music, often rendering that distinction irrelevant.
Rae is currently studying Music Technology in a graduate program at Georgia Tech. He continues to embrace his dual identity as beat producer and academic composer, still blurring the lines between the two whenever and wherever possible. His first full-length album, released in 2008 on the LA-based label thirdpersonadventuremode, is a collection of his best work from the first ten years of his career as an electronic musician, and naturally embraces a wide range of styles and compositional approaches. More releases are in the works for the near future.
