Biography
Hou Shihchieh, Jessie, born in Taiwan, is a renowned Erhu performer. She has won the champion of Huqin Solo Performance of Taiwan Province, and the Special Performance Award of Professional Erhu Group in "The 1st International Invitation of Chinese Instrumental Arts Contest". She was also awarded "The Top Ten News Figures of Shanghai" in 1988.
Jessie had been the Principal Musician of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. She now lectures at Hong Kong Music Institute and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She is examiner of the China National Instruments Performance Level Examination at the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, and member of Erhu Society of the Chinese Musicians Association.
Over the years, Jessie travelled around the world to perform, many of which had been broadcasted at televisions and radios in numerous places. Apart from collaborating with various national orchestras, she steps across the boundary and shows her talent in the domain of electric Erhu and Pop Music. She has been performing at concerts of various famous Pop singers, such as "Joseph Koo and James Wong 2000 Concert", "Golden Oldies and Classics Concerts", etc. She has also contributed to album music making of vast number of local artists, like George Lam, Sally Yeh, Sandy Lam, Hacken Lee, Andy Lau, Lowell Lo, David Lui, etc. Besides, she took part in music making of many movies and TV dramas. "Beyond the Realm of Conscience", "Rosy Business" and "Shaolin" are projects she has recently involved. In 2005, she was invited to the project, "Hacken Lee Concert Hall", and it was well-recognized by the public.
Besides performing, Jessie spends a lot of effort in educating and promoting the art of Erhu. Lately, she starts producing concerts and records. She founded "the Hong Kong Art of Huqin Organization" and "Hou Shihchieh Huqin", and held the "Hou Shihchieh and Students Music Concert" in 2007 and the "Erhu Recital of Xiao Bai-Yong" in 2010. In 2011, Jessie produces the album "When Jazz Meets Erhu". "The Hong Kong Art of Huqin Organization", under her guidance, won the 1st prize of the "International Huqin Invitation Tournament" held by the International Chinese Cultural and Arts Exchange Association in 2010.
Jessie is now active in the music industry with her cross-genre talents. With her bold and creative style, elegant and full tone in Erhu-playing, plus her meticulous showman-ship, she has gained a lot of admiration from audiences.
