Biography
Nekomatsuri-Hime (literally "Cat Festival Princess") is Japanese female singer-songwriter and visual artist. Her music is played primarily on electronic, synthesised instruments, and could be classified as moe-pop in terms of her almost permanently high-pitched, "child-adult" vocal delivery. However, it is often of a sombre nature, even comparable to some of the music of Akira Ifukube in its romanticising of the dark and mysterious aspects of traditional Japanese music and folklore; it could also be described as an audio equivalent of WaLoli and GothiLoli fashion for its fusion of "cute" and "dark". While early, self-relased cassette tapes consisted of little more than keyboards and vocals, since 2001 her music has been produced and arranged by 机 of 幼虫社, a synth-pop duo of an already very similar genre. This has led to a much greater variety in her music, which now includes electronic enka, western-themed music with piano, strings and music box, and several songs which are, in contrast, extremely upbeat and complex in their arrangement, much in the manner of MOSAIC.WAV. She also now, in addition to keyboards, often plays acoustic guitar.
In publicity shots and self-portraits (but not live performances) she is usually shown wearing her home-made fox mask. This resembles the wooden face-masks sold at summer festivals in terms of its design and colouring, but instead it covers her whole head except for her face, which is visible through the fox's open mouth.
