DESCRIPTION :
The Our Lady of Light Band is a Fall River based community band founded by Portuguese immigrants in 1969. Since then, the band has always thrived on excellence, having played for such prestigious occasions as the Bicentennial of America celebrations in 1976 in Washington, DC, a Fall River appearance by President Bill Clinton on his 1996 Presidential Campaign, NBC's Today Show when they broadcasted live from Battleship Cove, as well as many city and State ceremonies, and Portuguese feasts and festivals in Fall River, MA, Toronto (Canada), California, and the Azores Islands, Portugal.
The band is conducted by Manuel M. Canito, who is the first and only conductor of the band since its birth. Mr. Canito is well known for his tough rehearsals and many compositions and marches which include the Fall River March, which is the official March of the City of Fall River, and the Bicentennial of America March, which was written for that occasion. The march is registered in Washington, DC and was deemed the official March of the United States' 200 Year Birthday. Mr. Canito flocked to America in 1969, as when many of the founding and some current musicians (including Portuguese-American international singer Jorge Ferreira) came to this country, forming what has been known as one of the best amateur marching bands in the United States.
The Our Lady of Light Band has about 50 musicians ranging from ages 12 to 65. Some of the current musicians also include composers who have had works played with groups like Rhode Island Philharmonic Band, Rhode Island College Wind Ensemble, Metropolitan Wind Symphony Orchestra, and the Air Force Band of Liberty. The band is well known for its diverse variety in music. From Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, to The Beatles and The Beach Boys, the bands repertoire has no limits. Anyone is welcome to come play with the band, and you do not have to be Portuguese or from Portuguese heritage. The band made a recording in 1978, and a full CD album in 2004. The band is a very family-based group, playing in the band basically brings you into our musical family. Anyone interested in playing can contact us by leaving a message with your information, and what instrument you play. There are no auditions and we do accept all skill levels. The love for music is what makes this band a great place to play. We do march in parades and processions as well as perform many concert venues. We do like players who will be commited to the group. We always understand people have lives, but showing up to every rehearsal and every gig possible keeps the band united and playing at top notch level.
Our headquarters includes a lounge, a full size rehearsal room, a restaurant, a music school, an outdoor parking lot (available as outdoor feasts venue), a large banquet hall available for rent, and many other resources available to members and the community.
ABOUT THE EVENT :
SAINT PETER'S DIVINE HOLY GHOST'S EMPIRE FESTIVAL 2017.
Saint Peter (Syriac/Aramaic : ܫܸܡܥܘܿܢ ܟܹ݁ܐܦ݂ܵܐ, Shemayon Keppa, Hebrew : שמעון בר יונה Shim'on bar Yona, Greek : Πέτρος Petros, Latin : Petrus ; r. AD 30 ; d. between AD 64 and 68), also known as Simon Peter, Simeon, or Simōn, according to the New Testament, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, leaders of the early Christian Great Church. Hippolytus of Rome, a 3rd-century theologian, gave him the title of "Apostle of the Apostles". According to Catholic teaching, Peter was ordained by Jesus in the "Rock of My Church" dialogue in Matthew 16:18. He is traditionally counted as the first Bishop of Rome—or pope—and also by Eastern Christian tradition as the first Patriarch of Antioch. The ancient Christian churches all venerate Peter as a major saint and as the founder of the Church of Antioch and the Roman Church, but differ in their attitudes regarding the authority of his present-day successors.
The New Testament indicates that Peter's father's name was John (or Jonah or Jona) and was from the village of Bethsaida in the province of Galilee or Gaulanitis. His brother Andrew was also an apostle. According to New Testament accounts, Peter was one of twelve apostles chosen by Jesus from his first disciples. Originally a fisherman, he played a leadership role and was with Jesus during events witnessed by only a few apostles, such as the Transfiguration. According to the gospels, Peter confessed Jesus as the Messiah, was part of Jesus' inner circle, thrice denied Jesus and wept bitterly once he realised his deed, and preached on the day of Pentecost.
According to Christian tradition, Peter was crucified in Rome under Emperor Nero Augustus Caesar. It is traditionally held that he was crucified upside down at his own request, since he saw himself unworthy to be crucified in the same way as Jesus. Tradition holds that he was crucified at the site of the Clementine Chapel. His remains are said to be those contained in the underground Confessio of Saint Peter's Basilica, where Pope Paul VI announced in 1968 the excavated discovery of a first-century Roman cemetery. Every 29 June since 1736, a statue of Saint Peter in Saint Peter's Basilica is adorned with papal tiara, ring of the fisherman, and papal vestments, as part of the celebration of the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. According to Catholic doctrine, the direct papal successor to Saint Peter is the incumbent pope, currently Pope Francis.
Two general epistles in the New Testament are ascribed to Peter, but modern scholars generally reject the Petrine authorship of both. The Gospel of Mark was traditionally thought to show the influence of Peter's preaching and eyewitness memories. Several other books bearing his name—the Acts of Peter, Gospel of Peter, Preaching of Peter, Apocalypse of Peter, and Judgment of Peter—are considered by Christian denominations as apocryphal, and are thus not included in their Bible canons.
In John's gospel, Peter is the first person to enter the empty tomb, although the women and the beloved disciple see it before him. In Luke's account, the women's report of the empty tomb is dismissed by the apostles, and Peter is the only one who goes to check for himself, running to the tomb. After seeing the graveclothes, he goes home, apparently without informing the other disciples.
Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians contains a list of resurrection appearances of Jesus, the first of which is an appearance to Peter. Here, Paul apparently follows an early tradition that Peter was the first to see the risen Christ which, however, did not seem to have survived to the time when the gospels were written.
In the final chapter of the Gospel of John, Peter, in one of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, three times affirmed his love for Jesus, balancing his threefold denial, and Jesus reconfirmed Peter's position. The Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter on the Sea of Galilee is seen as the traditional site where Jesus Christ appeared to his disciples after his resurrection and, according to Catholic tradition, established Peter's supreme jurisdiction over the Christian church.
The Holy Ghost in Portuguese Culture :
It is said that Queen Saint Isabel saved bread from her own table to give to the hungry. Legend has it that the King tried to stop her from mingling with the poor and the Queen was once caught hiding something in her cloak. When he demanded that she open her cloak to show the concealed food, she said a prayer and threw open her cloak. Instead of bread, red roses tumbled out. It is for this reason that the statue of Queen St. Isabel is depicted with the mantle of flowers.
At one time during Queen St. Isabel's reign there was a terrible famine in Portugal. The Queen depleted all her funds while seeking food for her people and she had no financial resources left ; only her crown, the symbol of her royalty. One morning, at Mass, she promised the Holy Ghost, "I will give my crown to the Church if you will send me a miracle, so my people will be relieved of their hunger."
As she left the church, she saw ships coming into the harbor loaded with wheat and corn ! For over 700 years Portuguese people have celebrated this event in the Festa do Espírito Santo (a.k.a. Feast of the Holy Ghost), thanking and praying to the Holy Ghost to intercede in times of danger or calamity.
