Description
The free outdoor festival Counter Culture Festival will be held on Saturday, June 1st in the Julianapark. The park is set for the next four editions. Headlining at the sixth edition is the nine-member ska-punk band De Hardheid from Amsterdam. In 2006 the festival took place for the first time, in protest against the eviction of squats Vismarkt and the Dump, in Park Lepelenburg.
The festival is organized (almost annually) by activists of the squatters' movement, in cooperation with the political cultural center ACU. Because of financial problems, budget cuts and no suitable location the festival skipped two years. It was almost impossible to organize a new Counter Culture Festival by all new (safety) regulations too, but after discussions with the alderman of culture the festival organization has decided to continue.
Counter Culture Festival has found Julianapark as a new festival location for four years. The festival is free of admission and completely organized by volunteers. National and international bands and DJs are programmed in the city park. This year, in addition to the usual main stage and DJ stage, a punk shed and dubcorner are added. Furthermore, you can find vegetarian food and a DIY market at the festival site.
The festival has a diversified program with rap-act Kern Revolutionaire Zaken, acoustic folk group Shoe Eating Rabbits, ska-act Iedereen Zóôò Jotje, metal band Grasmoajer and punk band Radio Bikini from the Netherlands. Also acts from Belgium, Italy, Belarus, America, Israel and Germany will enter the stage, including the female-fronted digital hardcore-group Ambassador 21 from Minsk. With their message about power, rage and riot they were earlier programmed at Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Maschinenfest and GOGBOT.
The squatting scene regularly proves to be an energetic breeding place for many artists, musicians, theater acts and initiatives as bargain shops and cheap eatery. In the past acts such as Aux Raus, Krause, Elle Bandita and Stuurbaard Bakkebaard were programmed at Counter Culture Festival. The festival also organizes a benefit party on Friday, May 24th at ACU and an afterparty on Saturday, June 1st at dB's.
With the sixth edition of Counter Culture Festival the organization has started a collaboration with Stichting Zuilen en Vecht. They organize a concert in the Julianapark on Sunday, June 2nd, together with ZIMIHC Theater, a place for amateur artists in Utrecht. Together the costs of the stage, sound, market stalls, bar and more are shared.
