Description
Bartók Divertimento
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto
Brahms Symphony No 1
Daniel Hope violin
Daniel Harding conductor
London Symphony Orchestra
Although written in the Swiss Alps, even as Europe was on the verge of war, Bartók‘s Divertimento begins and ends in optimism (despite a brooding middle movement). Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, his last large orchestral work, was an instant success when performed in 1845 and remains a Romantic masterpiece. Brahms’s First Symphony, which took him 21 years to complete, has been nicknamed ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’ to suggest its grandeur and contained passion.
