Description

Club AC30 presents #116 Gregor Samsa + The Sleeping Years plus Club AC30 DJs

Gregor Samsa is a band from Virginia formed in 2000 and fronted by Champ Bennett. It takes its name from the main character of Franz Kafka's short story The Metamorphosis.

The band's sound, although rooted in the post-rock genre, differs from that of other bands in the genre in that it employs dual vocals by Bennett and Nikki King, a feature which relates them to the shoegazing and slowcore genres. Gregor Samsa has stated on its website that "the early history of the group has been lost in a wash of noise, strange beeps, and outright lies”.

Reviews of their album contained comparison to acts such as Brian Eno, Sigur Rós, Múm, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Low.

In support of its latest release, the band played twenty-one eastern US venues in March before then venturing a 23-date tour of the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, and Germany during April. Historically, the band has chosen to tour and perform alongside a wide array bands and genres including Spokane, Kayo Dot, Barzin, Part Chimp, Calla, Engine Down, Isis, Pelican, Explosions in the Sky, Interpol, and many others.

The Sleeping Years is the new project from Dale Grundle, formerly of the Catchers. Now signed to French label Talitres Records (Walkmen, Swell, etc) and UK label Rocketgirl (A place to bury strangers, Robin Guthrie, etc), the debut album “We’re becoming Islands One by One”, is a gorgeous exploration of melody and melancholy. A gifted lyricist, Dale’s exquisitely crafted songs tell of people trying to stay connected in a world seemingly designed to keep them apart.

Dale started The Sleeping Years with a trilogy of EPs in 2007, ‘You and Me Against The World’, ‘Setting Fire to Sleepy Towns’ and ‘Clocks and Clones’. They garnered critical acclaim, featuring on BBC Radio 1’s Introducing, the Guardian’s writer’s play list and on the cover mount of Rolling Stone and Word Magazine.

The Sleeping Years have toured across France, Italy, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, including dates supporting The Bowerbirds, Okkervil River and Damien Jurado.
