Description
Celebrated for their minimal phrased piano and dynamic drumming, Tokyo powerhouse trio mouse on the keys is in a league of their own. Their technically complex yet emotionally affecting work is cerebral, literate and influenced as much by philosophy and art as by music; the band plays jazz for those who don’t usually like jazz, frequently laying an accessible rhythm over an avant-garde rhythm in order to reach both crowds.
Named after the song Kitten on the Keys by ragtime songwriter Zez Confrey, mouse on the keys started out in 2006 with former members of influential Japanese underground band Nine Days Wonder, Akira Kawasaki (drummer/keyboardist/composer) and Atsushi Kiyota (keyboardist). Teaming up with keyboardist Daisuke Niitome, who had also composed music for countless jazz‐funk and hip hop bands, the trio worked toward integrating the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk with artistic piano compositions inspired by jazz, contemporary classical, the work of Godzilla composer Akira Ifukube, and the well-known Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Partly conceived as an installation art project, its live performances are always accompanied by film projections incorporating footage of Tokyo, landscapes, and computer-generated abstract imagery.
The band is currently under Japanese indie record label Machu Picchu, which houses artists such as toe, Enemies and Tangled Hair. Their unique sound, comprising two pianos, two keyboards and drums, continue to stand at the forefront of the Japanese indie scene.
