raison d’être (french for “reason to be”) is the name of a Swedish dark ambient musical project, whose sole member has always been Peter Andersson. (Not to be confused with another identically-named individual making music in a similar vein, under the name Deutsch Nepal.)

The music produced by raison d’être is chiefly dreamlike dark ambient soundscapes, with industrial and gothic touches. For example, synthesizers might play a droning melody over the sounds of metal on metal. Andersson often mixes Gregorian chants with his own keyboard and percussion playing.

I don't quite understand where the violent and intense descriptions come from in the press release. Yes, there are noisier segments in certain areas, but for the most part, this album is beautiful and somber.

Finally! After months and months of waiting. I am so moved by what I am hearing. This isn't just more of the same...its a return. Metamorphyses was an experiment it seems, dropping the melancholic atmosphere in favor of a darker one. The Stains of the Embodied Sacrifice is a masterpiece...just wow!

I am hearing nothing but great things about the new album. I agree with you with The Empty Hollow Unfolds and Requiem. I much prefer, as you put it, ambience and choir like soundscaping being eviscerated by shredding metal and cavernous rumble. A beautiful combination.

I cannot find anything under the layer of noise in "Phase IV". It's tempo is way too fast for my taste; it lacks the early works' contrast of harsh metal-on-metal noises over the droning background. This ambivalence makes "The Wasteland" and "Disintegrates from Within" pure perfection. And comparing the whole albums, Metamorphyses is rahter dull for me. It has it's highlights, of course, but I still prefer the Empty Hollow and Requiem. The new one is more in the vein of these records - ambience torn apart by shredding of rather heavy metal stuff on other metal stuff. :P
