Biography
Guyon Waton is a popular Javanese musical group known for their acoustic renditions of dangdut songs in the Javanese language. The group originates from the Kulon Progo area in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and was formed in 2015.
Initially, Guyon Waton was formed by a group of teenagers who gathered every night in front of a meatball stall to sing together. Their singing sessions were recorded on mobile phones and later uploaded to social media for personal documentation. As positive feedback from their followers grew, they began to upload their videos on social media platforms like YouTube.
The band consists of seven members, including Faisal Bagus Ibrahim on lead vocals, Ahmad Arifin on guitar, Hieronimus Ferry Widiyatmoko on melody, Ndika Rismaya Pelma Arga on ukulele, Ahmad Susilo Jati on Ketipung, Yuli Hamdani on bass, and Fauzan Jadid, who is known for his lively personality and humor, plays a vital role in Guyon Waton as the band's "cheerleader." Despite being less visible on stage, he is an important figure in the group and has contributed to the songwriting process. Fauzan Jadid has written several of the band's popular songs, including "Ora Masalah" and "Takkan Kembali."
In addition to creating their own music, Guyon Waton occasionally covers songs by other Javanese bands, such as Ngatmombilung's "Klebus," "Menepi," and "Pingal." These covers showcase the band's ability to put their own unique spin on traditional Javanese music while paying homage to their musical influences.
The band's name, Guyon Waton, comes from Javanese words that reflect the playful and lighthearted nature of their music. "Guyon" means joking or humorous, while "Waton" is a Javanese word that carries a nuanced meaning that can be interpreted in different ways. In the case of the band's name, "Waton" conveys a sense of carefree or spontaneous playfulness. Together, the name Guyon Waton suggests a group that approaches music with a sense of fun and spontaneity while drawing on traditional Javanese language and culture.
The inspiration for the name came from a Twitter account with the same name that had been active since 2011. Although the account's name loosely translates to "joking around" or "playing around," it was not the direct inspiration for the band's name. Instead, the owner of the Twitter account played a significant role in promoting the music of the band's lead vocalist, Faisal Bagus Ibrahim (also known as Bagus or Bagol), when he was still performing with Arief. Only after the two decided to form a band together did they adopt the name Guyon Waton.
