Awkward i is the moniker of Dutch songwriter, musician, singer and composer, Djurre de Haan (born 24 March 1981 in Groningen, The Netherlands). Now based in Amsterdam, De Haan started writing songs in his hometown of Groningen, inspired by songwriters such as Randy Newman, Bill Callahan, Elliott Smith and Will Oldham. He moved to the United States for a few years, spending time in rural Pennsylvania and Michigan. His years in the U.S. proved to be very determining, if only because he got to explore the English language thoroughly.
Back in The Netherlands, De Haan moved to Amsterdam and started befriending musicians. Four of them were in a band called Alamo Race Track. De Haan joined the band in September 2007. In Summer 2008 De Haan decided it was time to record an album of his own, under the Awkward i moniker. Jelte van Andel and Diederik Nomden joined him in the band. Awkward i’s but album I Really Should Whisper (2009) came out on Excelsior Recordings.
Sophomore album Everything on Wheels came out in 2011, with De Haan becoming a regular guest at the De Wereld Draait Door TV show.
In 2012, film director Michiel ten Horn asked De Haan permission to use a few Awkward i songs for his film, De ontmaagding van Eva van End. He also asked De Haan to write some original music for the movie. This marked the start of De Haan's parallel career as a composer of music for film, notably for Aanmodderfakker (2014), Monk (2017), Kamp Koekieloekie (2021) and Hotel Sinestra (2023). Most of his scores are available on streaming platforms, not under Awkward i, but under Djurre de Haan. He also wrote music for a theatre plays.
After years of focusing on film music, 2018 saw the long overdue release of the third Awkward I album, Kyd. As Djurre de Haan he released an album of indie pop for kids (Monsters en Freaks - Indiepop voor beginners, 2021). Awkward i's fourth full-length effort, Unalaska, is set for a January 2025 release.
