Schmickler grew up in Hitdorf (now a district of Leverkusen) and has been living in the Cologne Südstadt since the 1990s. During his school years at Landrat-Lucas-Gymnasium in Opladen, he was involved in student administration (SMV), served as a student representative, and wrote for the school newspaper.
