Soft Hearted Scientists

Magic, mystery and madness. These are the tools of Soft Hearted Scientists’ trade.

Nathan, Dylan, Paul and Mike bonded over a love of music and the mystical landscape of their homeland, Wales, setting sail for a land of musical delight.

Every kind of instrument under the sun is fair game and often gets warped into something new using filters, tremelo and rotary pedals and echo chambers.

Lyrics take in everything from Alexander the Great, drowned villages, Made in Chelsea (bad), and the great outdoors (good). Protest creeps into some songs but with tongue in cheek rather than brow beating, although the humour can be rather dark. For example the band would not literally advocate tying the mastermind behind X Factor to 4 shire horses and setting them galloping, but its a nice daydream.

4 star review for Wandermoon in The Independent, 7th August, 2011 Whimsical psychedelia must be like mother's milk to the Welsh. Soft Hearted Scientists are yet another band spiritually indebted to Syd Barrett, dedicated to making music with a sense of wonder akin to "the sound of stars flying off the end of a wand". Opener "Mountain Delight" fulfills that remit perfectly, finding them gazing into infinity over a bed of glockenspiel, acoustic and slide guitar. "The Trees Don't Seem To Know That It's September" is jocular British music-hall psych-pop, like long hair curling beneath a straw boater, while "Tornadoes In Birmingham" muses amusingly on how "the weather is altogether stranger than it used to be". But no stranger, surely, than the multi-sectioned "Westward Leading", an epic expedition evoking the "magic dust of an optimist". Andy Gill
